Named by Commander R. W. Meade, U.S. Navy (USN), and published in 1869 on Hydrographic Chart 225. It was so named because near the mouth of the stream are extensive coal croppings from which considerable lignite was taken in 1868-69(U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, 1883, p. 159.
