Named in 1929 byU.S. Forest Service (USFS)for John A. Thayer, 1896-1929, a junior forester in the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), who was killed by a brown bear on Admiralty Island. John Thayer made a reconnaissance of the timber bordering this lake a few weeks before his death and was the first United States forester to visit the lake.
