About

1.5 mi. N of Washbowl Basin and 3 mi. SE of Valdez, Chugach Mts.

Robe Lake is a fair sized lake outside of Valdez. It's fairly gradual drop in depth from the shore. There's a boat launch, limited parking, and no camp spots.

In summer the lake is warm enough to use for recreation. There are long grasses/weeds in the lake below the surface, which are annually cleared.

Robe Lake provides the only suitable rearing area for sockeye. The quality of this rearing area has declined drastically in the past 50 years due to well-documented sedimentation from Corbin Creek (Glacier). Previously, the Robe Lake system supported runs in excess of 40,000 sockeye salmon (ADF&G 1979); now the average run is approximately 5,000 sockeye (Williams 1979).

Getting To Robe Lake

Turn off the Richardson Highway. North, after Dayville Rd, if driving from Valdez.

The road from Richardson Highway to the lake is not cleared of snow until late winter when no more snow is expected, usually mid-April.

History of Robe Lake

Naming: Named in 1898 by United States Army Captain William Ralph Abercrombie for local prospector, Harvey Robe, who joined Abercrombie's exploration party for a short time.

Until the summer of 2015 there used to be a float pond dock, however it was removed after a long debate about it being installed illegally.
