History of Abercrombie Mountain

Named in 1959 by Lawrence Nielsen for Captain William R. Abercrombie, USA, who led several expeditions in this area in 1884, 1898, and 1899.Named after Captain William R. Abercrombie of the United States Army. Who spent much time in Valdez scouting routes and supporting prospectors who were ill equipped for the journey. He first arrived in 18 for surveying and was sent back in 1898 to finding an improved Valdez Trail. That would not require traveling up Valdez Glacier. During the Summer of 1899, Abercrombie returned to Alaska with the charge of creating the Trans-Alaska Military Road from Valdez to Fort Egbert. He was obliged to aid roughly 500 prospectors who had limited means through winter.
