History of Navy Island

Named "Ostrov Morskoi," i.e. "sea island," by Ensign Vasiliev, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), in 1832. This name was translated by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) as "Navy Island" probably intentionally changing the meaning somewhat. Lutke (1836, p. 274) called it "Ile du Large."
