Takhinsha Mts., trends N to its 1964 terminus, 2 mi. S of Takhin River and 28 mi. SW of Skagway, St. Elias Mts. 2 miles long.
Aurel Glacier is a quickly retreating glacier, from the 1954 topo maps when the glacier was around two miles long and headed from two mountains joining into one. The glacier now barely meets its confluence. USGS coordinates for the glacier are slightly off, placing it on the wide ridge/buttress of the mountain. Aurel Glacier was named by the USC&GS for Aurel Krause, the glaciers southern terminus heads from the north side of nearby Mount Krause (named for him and his brother), in the Takhinsha Mountains.
Aurel mapped the area with his brother Arthur Krause (biologist and photographer) in 1881.
Travel to Haines, then get dropped off on the top of McBride Glacier, or cross the Chilkat River and hike up the Takhin River.
