History of Kupreanof Strait

Name derived from Kupreanof Island and published in 1849 by the Russian American Company. Called "Proliv Karlukskiy" or "Karluk Strait" (probably for village or Karluk) in 1839 or 1840 by Murashev. The descriptive name "Proliv Syvernot," meaning "Northern Strait," was published by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 23).
