Extends NW from the head of Glacier Bay between Johns Hookins Inlet and Rend Inlet to the foot of Grand Pacific Glacier across the international boundary in Canada, 1 mi. NW of Russell I., in Glacier Bay National Monument, 78 mi. NW of Hoonah, St. Elias Mts.

History of Tarr Inlet

Named by Lawrence Martin, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), about 1912 for Ralph Stockman Tarr, 1864-1912, professor of physical geography at Cornell University, who visited this fiord in 1911. Tarr was with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 1888-91, and taught geology and geography at Harvard and Cornell Universities 1890-1912. He was the author of many geological publications including several on Alaska.
