W. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), reported the name as "East Bay" in 1880; it was published in 1911 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) as "Long Johns Lagoon". A 1929 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) map shows "Long John Lagoon."
