History of Vanderbilt Reef

Named in 1880 by Captain L. A. Beardslee, U.S. Navy (USN), for the man who discovered the reef, Captain J. M. Vanderbilt of the Northwest Trading Co. Captain Vanderbilt came to Alaska about 1875 and became captain of the company's steamer Favorite, which did surveying work for the U. S. Navy. He died in 1890 (DeArmond, 1957, p. 30). The name was published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) in 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 194).
