HistoryAleut name, derived from Cape Chiniak. Identified as "Giniak Island" in 1803-06 by von Langsdorff (1813-14, v. 2, p. 56) who said Cape Chiniak "is bounded to the north by two small islands, one of which in the language of the country, is called Giniak * * *."
