Descriptive name reported in 1897 by Lieutenant Commander J. F. Moser, U.S. Navy (USN), commander of the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries (USBF) steamer Albatross. Named "Makhnashka" by Cpat. Tebenkov (1852, map 23), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), called "Kekurnyy," meaning "pillar," by the Russian Hydrographic Dept. in 1849.
