Local name reported in 1920 by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); derived from Redoubt Bay. navigator, Ivan Vasiliev the first; published as such by Lieutenant Sarichev (1826, map 19), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN); called "Ozero Redutskoye," meaning "redoubt lake," possibly after a fishing station at the lake's outlet called "the Redoubt" in 1849 by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 38), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN).
