History of Elson Lagoon

Named Elson's Bay by Captain Beechey (1831, p302), Royal Navy (RN), in September 1826 for Master Thomas Elson, Royal Navy (RN), of H.M.S. Blossom. Elson was placed in charge of a party sent in an open boat to explore the coast from NE of Icy Cape to Point Barrow (Beechy, p 304-321). Cmdr. Maguire (Great Britain, 1854, map facing p. 186), Royal Navy (RN), shows the name Tasuk, which is the common Eskimo generic "Tasik" for an enclosed body of water.
