History of Peril Strait

Translation in 1882 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) of "Proliv Pogibshiy;" published in 1848 on Russian Hydrographic Dept. Chart 1397. The name is derived from "the circumstance that on its shores, in 1799, a large number of Aleuts (said to be 150) perished from eating poisonous mussels." This account was reported by Captain V. F. Lisianski who called this feature "pernicious strait."
