History of Howling Dog Canyon

From Howling Dog Rock: "At the time of Hudson's Bay Co.'s activities on the Porcupine River, the south wall of the Red Gate was known as Howling Dog Rock. The dogs used in tracking freight barges upstream were unable to haul loaded boats past this vertical cliff, and while the boats were being pulled up by men with long ropes the dogs had to scramble up the steep back slope of the rock and down again to join the party, or would remain behind and howl." (FitzGerald, 1944, p.227).
