Name originally applied to Hess Creek in 1866-67 by Captain Frank Ketchum, leader of the Western Union Telegraph Company Expedition, for Fredrick Whymper, English artist with the party. However, when gold was discovered in the area by Mike Hess in 1892, the larger stream came to be known as Hess Creek.
