Prospectors' name reported in 1899 by D. C. Witherspoon (in Schrader and Brooks, 1900, map 2), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The 1900 "Map of Nome Peninsula" by J. M. Davidson and B. D. Blakeslee applied this name to a southeast-flowing tributary of Penny River, 5 mi. to the north.
