This appears to be a local translation of the Eskimo name often spelled "I-am-tuk" (Aiamtak?). The Eskimo name was first reported about 1900 and spelled "I-im-tuck". The stream is thought to be so called because "a bend on the creek has the comparable appearance of a breech-loading Shotgun when broken for loading (?)." P. Tikhmeniev published another Eskimo name, "Lishtak", for this stream in 1861.
