Named in 1907 by International Boundary Commission (IBC) surveyors for Samuel Patch, 1807-29, a diving champion of his era. Called "Uncle Sam Creek" by prospectors; reported in 1898 by E. C. Barnard, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). See Liberty Fork.
