Named in 1932 by Robert Marshall, (1956, p. 83), probably for the Eskimo girl, Kayak. In describing the Fourth of July celebration of 1931 in Wiseman, Marshall wrote, "The big feature of the festivities***was dancing. We started at six-thirty on the eveinng of July 4, and at eleven next morning four Eskimo girls, Kaaruk, Ashuwaruk, Kayak, and Kachwona, were still going strong***"
