Local name reported in 1910 by A. H. Brooks, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). In 1899 Lieutenant Herron (1901, p. 45 and map), USA, recorded the Tanana Indian name for the lower course of theis stream, which he showed heading in Lake Minchumina, as "Nitz-u-tal-ee-na River." See Muddy River.
