History of Volkmar River

Originally named Goodpaster River in 1885 by Lieutenant H. T. Allen, USA, "in honor of the Goodpaster family in Kentucky." The stream now known as Goodpaster River he named Volkmar River for Col. William Volkmar, U.S.A. (Allen, 1887, pl. 3). Later, the names were transposed by explorers and Volkmar River was reported in 1903 by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at its present location (Prindle, 1913a, pl. 16).
