Eskimo name reported by Tl. Stoney (1900 map), U.S. Navy (USN), in 1886 as "Ping-ing-a-look" but submitted by P. S. Smith, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), as "Pingaluk" in 1913. The name may mean "bad hill."
