HistoryOn September 6, 1826, Captain Beechey (1831, p. 320), Royal Navy (RN), wrote, "We noticed the water, whilst off Marryat Creek to be of very muddy colour, as if some river discharged itself there." Eskimo name "Kukpak" meaning "big river" was published in 1890 U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) by as "Kookpuk."
