History

Eskimo name shown as "R. Cogrua" on British Admiralty (Brit. Adm.) Chart 593, 1827-55. Lieutenant Ray (1885, p. 54), USA, lists the word "kug'ru," meaning "swan." However, other spellings of this name would indicate that it may be "Kukraq," meaning "creek."
