History of Jago River

Named by Leffingwell (1919, p. 92), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS); derived from the name "Jags" and modified to "Jago" in order to "place the name of Lieutenant Jago of Collinson's (Captain Richard, Royal Navy (RN)) ship, on the map * * *." The name "Jags," according to Leffingwell, is the Eskimo attempt to pronounce "the whaler's nickname for a drunken native who first braved the devils that were supposed t o dwell on that river."
