History of Black River

Named by Lieutenant G. M. Stoney, U.S. Navy (USN), in 1885. Its Eskimo name, according to Lieutenant Cantwell (1884, p. 61), U.S. Revenue-Cutter Service (USRCS), was "Umakalookta," "Am-mok-a-look-tok (or tah)," "Um-nok-a-luk-ta," or "Um-ok-a-look-tok."
