History of Black River

Named "Big Black" in 1898 by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) "because of confusion of this stream with Rat and Little Black Rivers on maps." The word Draanjik is of Gwich'in origin and translates to “caches along the river.”
