History of Black River

Local name; reported by Dall (1870, p. 275), U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS); so called because the waters of this river are clear and black compared to the muddy color of others in this area. Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 3), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), shows the Russian-Eskimo name "Protoka Kipunayak" meaning "Kipunayak Passage" which corresponds to the present-day Eskimo name for this stream often written "Kip-nai-ak." The Eskimo name refers in meaning to the curves or twists of the stream.
