HistoryNamed in 1927 by the United States and Canada for James H. Van Wagenen, 1881-1935, civil engineer and International Boundary Commission (IBC) commissioner. Van Wagenen was born in Iowa and was educated in Illinois and Missouri. He was topographic engineer with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 1909. In 1915 he was appointed chief engineer of the U. S. section of the International Boundary Commission (IBC); he was appointed commissioner in 1929.
