History

Named in 1887 by Lieutenant Commander C. M. Thomas, U.S. Navy (USN), for General Montgomery Cunningham Meigs, 1816-92, USA, who was in charge of building the Potomac Aqueduct and other structures in Washington, D.C., including parts of the Capitol.
