Thirty miles S of Shungnak, bounded on the N by the Selawik River, on the S by Billy Hawk Creek, on the E by Wheeler Creek, and on the W by Ingruksukruk Creek, Hogatza High.
Local name reported by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in 1965 to have been in use for 60 years; derived from Purcell Mountain, the highest point in the mountains.
