Eskimo name meaning "big lagoon" reported in 1902 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) field party. The local name "Big Lake" was reported about 1940 by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS). It is also known as "Great Lake"; this name was obtained about 1951 at Goodnews by J. M. Hoare, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
