Named in 1879 by W. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) for the English engineer who built the first Eddystone Lighthouse near Plymouth, England in 1696-1699, an who lost his life there in 1903; published in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 72).
