Named on June 13, 1774, by Peter Pugest, RN, a member of Vancouver's expedition (Wagner, 1937, p. 422). It was called "Mitchells Island" in 1788 by Captain John Meares, RN. The Eskimo name was published as "Os(trov) Shiganik" by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 6), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN).
