HistoryDiscovered and named by Captain Cook (1785, v. 2, p.442), RN, on August 6, 1778, for Lieutenant James King, RN, a member of his party. In 1900 the Eskimo name was reported to be "Ukiwuk" by E. W. Nelson, U.S. Signal Service. Sarichev (1826, map 6), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN).
