About

Located in Kamishak Bay, 70 mi. SW of Homer; Aleutian Range. 32.4 square miles in size.

History

Formed by Augustine Volcano, it was discovered and named "Saint Augustine Island" in 1778 by Captain James Cook, Royal Navy. Late 18th century charts referred to it as "Mount Saint Augustine." Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 5), Imperial Russian Navy, called it "O(strov) Chernoburoy," which was derived from the Russian words "chernyy," meaning "black," and "buryy," meaning "brown." Reported in 1867 as "Blackbrown Island" by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS).
