Eskimo name published in 1842-44, by Lieutenant L. A. Zagoskin, Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "Kvikhlyuak," with note in Russian "Krivoy, Izvilistyy," meaning "crooked, meandering." Captain C. W. Raymond, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, referred to it as "American Mouth" in 1869.
