Named by Captain Nathaniel Portlock (1789, p. 7), Royal Navy (RN), about April 24, 1787, for Joseph Woodcock, an apprentice aboard the King George, who was frequently sent ashore among the Indians as a hostage. Name shown only on his chart ( Wagner, 1937, p. 524).
