Named in 1869 by Commander R. W. Meade, U.S. Navy (USN), for Admiral Thomas Tingey Craven, U.S. Navy (USN). The Tlingit Indian name for this point was published by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 8), Imperial Russian Navy (IRN), as "M(ys) Tlyakhini" or "Cape Tlyakhini."
