History of Phipps Peninsula

named "Cape Phipps" by Captain George Dixon in 1787 for the Hon. Constantine John Phipps, Baron Mulgrave, English explorer, famous for his voyage to Spitzebergen and the Arctic Ocean in 1773 (U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey, 1883, p. 208). been some confusion in the application of the name. Cape Phipps was applied to Ocean Cape by some of the early hydrographers, and in 1823 it was applied by Captain C. V. Kromchenko to Point Carew. by Baker (1906, p. 496), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and "Phipps Bay Peninsual" by International Boundary Commission (IBC) in 1928.
