History of Cape Douglas

Name given by Captain Cook (1785, p385), Royal Navy (RN), on May 25, 1778. He wrote, "This promontory I named Cape Douglas in honor of my very good friend, Dr. [John] Duglas, canon of Windsor." Wagner (1937, p384) says, "in reality he [Cook] considered the two-headed mountain to be the cape as he was at some distance from it ." Baker (1906, p. 224): "The native name is given as Kuluak, Koukhat, and Kuchat."
