Named "Gavan Pavlova," meaning "Paul's Harbor" in 1849 by Captain Tebenkov (1852, map 8). In 1869 Commander R. W. Meade, U.S. Navy (USN), called it "Freshwater Bay." Baker (1906, p. 491) says "Its native (Indian) name is said to be Nasanki."
