extends NE 60 mi from Bering Sea to mouth of Kuskokwim River, bounded on NW by Cape Avinof and on SE by Cape Newenham.
Eskimo name obtained by Ustingov (complete name not available), a Russian who visited the area in 1818. The word "Kuskokwim," according to the Moravian missionary J. H. Kilbuck, is the genitive of "Kuskokwik," the last syllable meaning "river," but the rest of the name is of unknown meaning (Spurr, 1900, p. 73). The name of the bay was derived from the river name.
