The name is based on the wreck in this immediate vicinity of the vessel Alice in 1914. The name "Cay Rocks" was reported by the commander of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) steamer Hodgson during a survey of the area in 1960. The triangulation station Cay is located on the prominent rock.
