History of Chiswell Islands

According to Captain Vancouver (1798, v. 3, p. 152-153), Royal Navy (RN), these were named "Chiswell Isles" in 1786 by Captain Nathaniel Portlock. They may have been named for "Trench Chiswell, a very rich man" (Wagner, 1937, p. 380). The Russians called them "Ostrova Ayaliki," (Ayaliki Islands) which may be an Eskimo name (Tebenkov, 1852, map 6).
