April 2, 2002 - Mountaineering Fatality at Mount Saint Elias
Mount Saint Elias, Tyndall Glacier,
Aaron Martin, 32, of Tahoe City, and Reid Sanders, of West Yellowstone, Montana, died in a fall while descending Tyndall Glacier on skis. Party members John Griber, and Greg Von Doersten, both of Jackson, Wyoming made the descent safely. The four planned to climb to the summit of the Mount St. Elias and be the first to ski or snowboard to sea level from that height.
Aaron fell around 2,000ft, and Reid fell about 1,000ft.
