-1 Bowl, Turnagain Pass, Seattle Ridge,

A 16-year-old boy from Soldotna, died when snowmaching with a group at -1 Bowl when he got caught in an avalanche. About an hour after the avalanche occurred, after digging down 10ft through the snow, they reached the young man who was already deceased.

"The avalanche crown at the top of the slide path was estimated to be 2 to 3 feet deep and 500 feet wide, and it failed on a weak layer of buried surface hoar where the slope angle measured 35 to 40 degrees, the avalanche center said in a preliminary report updated Sunday afternoon. The slide path ran from an elevation of 3,150 feet down to 2,650 feet, for a vertical run of about 500 feet, the report said."
