Description
Surf scoters are easily recognized by their swollen misshapen multicolored bills. Males are solid black with a white patch between their eyes and centered on the back of their neck. Females are brown with dark crowns and white patches between the eyes and bill, and behind and below the eyes.
Diet & Habitat
Surf scoters are named such for the tendency to spend time eating what they find in the surf. They spend time in both fresh and salt water and can be found in flocks ranging into the hundreds, often mixed with other aquatic birds.
